π SHORT & SWEET: Ice cream-wise, there is only one choice and that's goat milk soft serve! Gluten free, lactose free, this goat milk soft serve is a delicious alternative to try. Toppings of dense but flavorful halva (also gluten and lactose free) with sesame tahini provide a welcome crunch that dissolves in your mouth.
π STORY: Not too long after having brunch at the Wild Son (and eating ice cream dessert there), I was still hankering after ice cream! I nagged my boyfriend to Yelp ice cream places nearby in the Meatpacking District where we were. It was also freezing cold, so I also told him to hurry up xD
Seed + Mill showed up first - I saw it had four stars, so I said, alright let's go! :D The shop was located inside Chelsea Market, so we braced ourselves against the cold wind, and rushed over. Icy wind (what was WITH the cold front on Saturday?! Jeez) sliced our cheeks left and right, but we made it safely inside the warmth and bustle of Chelsea Market. We had entered the west entrance, and not seeing Seed + Mill yet, we walked eastward. And wow, Chelsea Market was PACKED. There was even a long line for the MEN'S RESTROOM. *gasp* That's a rarity for sure.
So J and I walked past many shops, passing by lobster sandwiches, sample sales, hot dogs... and then we found Seed + Mill! It was tucked away behind and their location was more like a counter than a shop/storefront. People were lined up and filled the counter perimeter, and it took a moment to figure out what was exactly on the menu and where the line started.
It was tucked away behind and their location was more like a counter than a shop/storefront. People were lined up and filled the counter perimeter, and it took a moment to figure out what was exactly on the menu and where the line started. While I waited to be helped, I noticed there was a LOT of halva.
[halva] literally means sweet in Arabic, and is a traditional Middle Eastern treat. According to their website, Seed + Mill's halva is a concoction of tahini (aka sesame butter) with sugar and then further combined with selected flavors. Their display window showcased many, many varieties of halva - so many that it was overwhelming lol! I saw nutella halva, lemongrass halva, dates halva... you name it, and I bet they would have it.
"Have you been helped yet?"
Her question broke through my reverie and I refocused my eyes from the halva to the girl in front of me. I asked her to explain the menu, since I wasn't sure what exactly was available for ice cream. It turns out there is only one flavor (vanilla), and toppings of halva are optional for $1.00, and to have it in a cone was an additional $1.50. The halva toppings would actually be a combination of ALL flavors available - this was a pleasant surprise! Now I didn't have to choose between them :)
π THOUGHTS: And my one scoop was beautiful! It looked amazing, as it was a beautiful sphere of ice cream. The color of this vanilla was pure white with specks (otherwise known as vanilla bean seeds or even caviar!) arrayed across this vanilla globe.
The look of this ice cream was simple, yet elegant. And on first bite? YUM.
Madagascar vanilla is the most common type of vanilla, and I see why - it has the highest content of vanillin and was creamy, sweet (but not too sweet), and toasty! Each bite had a toastiness to it that felt warm and reassuring to the taste buds... and my soul.
ENCORE: Yes! I would definitely visit Morgenstern's again just to eat Madagascar Vanilla! And of course to try all the other flavors.
